Netflix Web Failure

Even the most hardened infrastructure sometimes fails. Recently, Google groups was down, as you can see here. This time, it was Netflix:

 Netflix down

If infrastructure failures can happen to Google and Netflix, they can happen to you. If you are considering software as a service vendors (SaaS), be prepared for occasional downtime, as it will happen eventually.

Yes, downtime happens, but SaaS isn't the issue. Rather, the challenge SaaS vendors face is that if they follow the prescribed method of implementing SaaS by producing one instance of their app for all customers, then any outage will be experienced by every user. However, this isn't the only way to provide SaaS.

Bert, a great point. As an example, Salesforce.com recently went down for scheduled maintenance, and all their customers were affected. On the other hand, its practically unthinkable that the entire Google or Amazon sites would go down. Sure, some part of Google may go down, but the main Google search site will still function.
